What is Readers Theatre?

The Readers Theatre Institute was founded in 1974 by Dr. William J. Adams, a Stanford University graduate, the Institute was dedicated to the advancement and development of Readers Theatre methodology. Unfortunately, the Institution no longer exists, but the concept of Readers Theatre lives on.

“Readers Theatre is a presentational performance based on principles and techniques of oral interpretation and conventional theater to present all kinds of literary and non-literary material in a choice of staging styles to entertain, instruct, and persuade.

“A Readers Theatre production does not surrender performance power because it is less “realistic” than conventional theatre. Since the “real” events take place in the audiences mind, each beholder can create idealized characters, scenery and textual perceptions… more believable than the director or scene designer can materialize.” -Adams
